The demand for the utmost in economic efficiency and optimum function has lead to a clear overall concept for the 20-classroom AHS. The hub of school activity is the 3-storey, glass-covered entrance hall around which all functions of the school have been clearly arranged and which contributes markedly to the pleasant atmosphere of the house. From here one gains a clear overview of all levels of the school, three massive wings running North to South with their class rooms, teachers’ and special rooms reflect the characteristic, small structure of the local building development. The facade panels made from reddish clay blend ideally with the natural environment, which is reflected in the large horizontal ribbon windows. Architectural accents are set by the library, located in what seems like a floating glass structure above the entrance area, and the gymnasium which is almost 8 m high and half buried in the ground and whose flat roof has been covered with grass to harmonize with the Weinviertel landscape. This allows the free area which is used as sports ground to be retained in its entirety and, in line with an ecological concept, gently integrated in the natural landscape.
